Connection

The World Health Assembly just made loneliness a health priority. It took a vote to say the obvious.

This week in Geneva the World Health Assembly adopted its first resolution on social connection, co-sponsored by Spain and Chile. It urges member states to build strategies for meaningful social connection into national health policy, to collect data on loneliness and isolation, to raise public awareness, and to pursue cross-sector efforts to build connected communities; it asks the WHO to coordinate research and write guidelines. The WHO Commission on Social Connection, co-chaired by the former US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, is due to report its full findings this summer. A resolution changes nothing by itself. It is still worth noticing which direction the world's health ministers just pointed.

What the evidence behind it says. The research on social connection and mortality is some of the most consistent in all of health. A 2010 meta-analysis of 148 studies found stronger relationships associated with about a 50% greater likelihood of survival; a 2015 follow-up found loneliness, isolation and living alone each associated with higher mortality, with the effects strongest below retirement age. The Harvard Study of Adult Development has reached the same conclusion over more than eighty-five years. These are observational findings, and the mechanisms — inflammation, sleep, stress hormones, behavior — are still being mapped. But the direction has not changed in a generation, and now it has a resolution number.

Ben’s take

This is the lever that products cannot pull. You cannot sell a person a neighborhood, a park or a reason to walk to it, and so the longevity industry does not try. Governments can. A resolution asks ministries to count the lonely and build for them — infrastructure, not interventions. Our rule is to monetize institutions and democratize the message for individuals. This is what the institutional half looks like when it works.

Loree’s take

I ask every new patient who they spent time with this week who is not in a health forum. The answer is a better predictor of how they will do than most of what is on their lab panel. The resolution will not change the answer. It might, over a decade, change the streets and the schedules that make the answer so often "no one."

Why it matters to a recovering optimizer. The fundamental with the strongest mortality evidence is the one you cannot do alone and cannot buy. That makes it invisible to an industry built on individual purchases, and it makes it the one most easily dropped from an optimized life. A government cannot make you see your friends. It can, slowly, make the city easier to see them in. You can do the fast part yourself.

The subtraction

A ministry can build the park. It can't call your sister. Call your sister anyway.
